This album is so nonchalant that it feels as if it was written without longevity in mind, It is just the songs that Demarco felt like writing at the time he recorded the album.

And although this shorter format does feel like a full album, by itself it is lacking in vision. It’s eight short songs all sharing the theme love and loss. “Another One” feels like a capsule of an album.

Releasing music in a format of only eight songs as a time seems to suit Mac Demarco. It feels like lazy writing compared to other songs such as “Ive Been Waiting For Her” and the title track “Another One” which show some great development within the song. Compared to the rest of the album where the songs have clearly defined sections and melodic changes, “Just to Put Me Down” seems stagnant and born from only one idea. “Just to Put Me Down” feels like It never really goes anywhere. At times it feels as if Demarco is choosing these synth sounds to purposefully be weird, but it never feels out of place, If anything this weirdness only makes everything more playful and laid-back.

All of this comes together to create a sound that is unique and memorable. The guitars shimmer and warble, The keyboards sound like they are being constantly twisted and warped. The psychedelic aesthetic that is heard throughout this album feels as if it has been treated with care and attention. The song writing harks back to a simpler time without ever being nostalgic or trying too hard to shows its psychedelic roots. This is some of Demarco’s best lyrical work to date, It’s simple, straight forward and alludes to more than it shows. The bumbling bass line and nonchalant vocal delivery of “No Other Heart” sounds closer to a sigh of relief than a story of unrequited love. Demarco is delivering melancholy lyrics over chilled out beats so intoxicating you can almost listen to this album without realising the heartbreak involved. The opening track “The Way You’d Love Her” sets the tone for the rest of this album perfectly. It’s a welcome haircut after “Salad Days” delivered all of the vibe “2” without any of the real stand out tracks like “Ode to Viceroy” and “My Kind of Woman”. He has swapped some of his trademark jangly guitars for synths sounds and really honed his melodic writing to make for a much punchier album.

Mac Demarco’s tropical, psychedelic sound is in full force on this album. It’s an album that deals with romance in all its aspects, From lust (“No Other Heart”) to loss (“Without me”), It’s bold, unpretentious and oozes with charm. “Another One” is the latest synth tinged offering from the Canadian singer-songwriter. From the grit of “Rock and Roll Nightclub” to the easy grooves of “Salad Days” Demarco shows he is not afraid to experiment with his own brand laid-back indie pop. Mac Demarco is not an artist adverse to changing his sound.
