ALL Sam Ick manufacturing moved to China and Sam Ick partnered with some Chinese to open up a banjo factory, the same factory makes guitars as well.Įven so, this discussion is centered on comparing two banjos made by a Korean network of subcontractors AND Chinese subcontractors in 2002 with a Korean zip code as opposed to a banjo made by a Korean network of subcontractors AND Chinese subcontractors with a Chinese zip code. ALL banjo production, and by that I mean ALL stopped in 2003 when Sam Ick went bankrupt, so there is no valid need to compare them except for being nostalgic. Well, hubby called actually, hubby called twice in fact, and talked to a very informed individual, I believe Kevin. It is pointless to compare apples with oranges. So, if you have never seen this MM Korean banjo, why compare apples with oranges? As some are doing.Īlso, don't except what I say, after all, I'm not the Guru in banjo La La Land, call the factory then you can be in the know. I don't expect to change the minds of those that are set in their ways. I'm not saying, and never did say, that it's the best banjo going, because it certainly is not, however, their Korean made MGB2 is exceptional compared to the China produced banjos which followed this particular banjo in the MM line. The retail price for this particular Korean made banjo was 895.00 Which they never used again on the lesser quality banjos made in China. So, the original MGB2 isn't new at all.Īlso, with this Korean banjo, MM used higher grade tuners.

Only 260 Korean banjos were made for MM as the MGB2 Rocky Top. All others were and are made in "China," as said by the Factory. My suggestion would be to simply call the Factory and get the skinny correct, because you're wrong in many areas, and it's good to know the truth.Īs I said, this MM MGB2, which was made in "Korea," was the ONLY MM banjo made there. It's a nice looking banjo at first glance but it just doesn't have it under the hood. Yes, it's a good starter beginner resonator banjo but you'll soon want to graduate up by the time you're an intermediate player. The peghead angle off the neck is shy (not enough of an angle), The neck is chubby and 3- piece, plastic nut, and tuner ratio too high. The resonator walls are thick enough to be used for a bullet proof vest. The inlay on the fingerboard is not MOP.MOTS maybe.

It has a mahogany rim (block), not laminated. However it's not in the same ballpark as your Yates, Hubers, Hatfields, Gibsons, and Stellings. It was a good banjo for me when I first started learning to play. I think that was the only difference between the 1 and 2 series.I could be wrong. I'm thinking the MGB-2 had the carving on the neck heel hand stop area. I left it out on the curb for the garbage truck to pick up.I also had to remove the resonator first in case a child crawled inside and couldn't get out.just kidding Paula. I have an MGB-1 wreath inlay like the photo on the 's actually in pieces now.
